About Kaspersky Rescue Disk

Kaspersky Rescue Disk is a free bootable antivirus for Windows PCs that are too infected to clean normally.

You start the computer from a USB stick instead of Windows. Because the malware never loads, it cannot hide or block the scan.

That makes it effective against rootkits, bootkits, ransomware lockers and other threats that survive regular antivirus scans.

  • Scans outside Windows

Malware is not running, so it cannot defend itself or hide files.

  • Finds rootkits and bootkits

Checks boot sectors and system areas that are invisible from inside Windows.

  • Updates before scanning

Downloads the latest signatures over the network before each scan.

  • Built-in file manager

Copy important files to an external drive before you clean anything.

How to use Kaspersky Rescue Disk

  1. Download on a clean PCGet krd.iso on a computer you trust - not the infected one.
  2. Write it to a USB stickUse Rufus (Windows) or balenaEtcher to create a bootable USB of at least 2 GB. This erases the stick.
  3. Boot the infected PC from USBPlug the stick in and open the boot menu - usually F12, F11, F8 or Esc right after power-on - then choose the USB drive.
  4. Update, scan and cleanConnect to the internet, update the databases, then run a full scan of all drives and let it remove or quarantine threats.
  5. Restart into WindowsRemove the USB stick and restart. Run a normal antivirus scan afterwards to finish the job.

When to use a rescue disk

  • Windows will not start or crashes during startup.
  • Your antivirus is disabled or cannot be installed.
  • A ransomware screen blocks the desktop.
  • Infections keep coming back after normal scans.

For a quick second opinion on a working PC, try the ESET Online Scanner instead.

System requirements

  • 64-bit PC with BIOS or UEFI boot support
  • 2 GB RAM recommended
  • USB stick (2 GB or larger) or a blank DVD
  • Internet connection to update the virus databases

Back up important files before cleaning. Removing deeply embedded malware can occasionally affect system files.

Frequently asked questions

Is Kaspersky Rescue Disk free?

Yes. It is free for personal and commercial use and does not require a licence key.

Can it remove ransomware?

It removes the ransomware program and screen lockers. It cannot decrypt files that were already encrypted - for that, check the free decryptors at nomoreransom.org.

What if the PC will not boot from the USB stick?

Check that the stick is first in the boot menu. On some UEFI PCs you may need to disable Secure Boot temporarily in the firmware settings - turn it back on after cleaning.

Will it delete my files?

It only removes or quarantines infected objects. Your documents and photos are not touched unless they are infected.

Is it available in my country?

Kaspersky no longer sells products in the United States. If the direct link does not work for you, use the official download page or the Avira Rescue System.
