Frequently asked questions

Is File Unlocker free?

Yes - completely free, with no trial, ads or bundled software.

Why does it need administrator rights?

Windows protects handles owned by other users and system services. Without admin rights it can only release locks held by your own programs.

Is it safe to force-unlock a file?

It uses documented Windows APIs. The program that held the file may lose unsaved changes, so close it normally when you can.

Windows SmartScreen warns about the file. Why?

SmartScreen warns about new programs that few people have downloaded yet. Verify the SHA-256 checksum on the download page, then choose "More info" and "Run anyway".
